My impression was that Bowlsby fired Harris because he talked to the players and they almost unanimously hated him. That was worse than the 1-11 record.

My possibly flawed memory is that actually the players talked quite loudly to Bowlsby on their own initiative. Indeed that was far worse than the 1-11 record. It had been quite clear from the get-go that Harris was not a "fit" for Stanford. The player revolt simply created a "problem" that could not be ignored, forcing the issue.
