Not sports trivia, but I found this interesting:
The first major monument to President Abraham Lincoln and the first Atlantic to Pacific highway in the USA were one and the same: the Lincoln Highway, built in 1913. It started in Times Square, made its way through 13 states (14 at its peak) and finished at Lincoln Park in San Francisco. The golf course predated the park (1902 to 1909). There is a small sign in the parking lot that reads "Lincoln Highway Terminus" and another sign at the Legion of Honor in SF (by the bus stop). Behind it, there is a replica marker, one of 2,400 placed along the highway by boy scouts in 1928.
In 1919, a large military expedition drove the length of the highway.

One of the members of the expedition was Brevet Lt. Col. Dwight D. Eisenhower. It gave him the idea for a national highway system. Here's his notes on the trip:
