What I don’t get is why anyone would think that Russia would in any way have an environment conducive to doing business (ie, rule of law, predictable environment, enforceable contracts, etc.).  Just ask Bill Browder.

Of course, for some people, the corruption, lack of rule of law, and ability to exploit natural resources and extract rents are a feature, not a bug.

The oldest partner in my most recent firm spent two years in Russia attempting to create a worthwhile legal practice. Corruption everywhere you went. The worst was a young KGB officer named Putin. Allegedly.
