Pretty good halfback and punter for Notre Dame, too. Still holds the ND record for longest punt at 86 yards (70 in the air). Third overall selection in 1936 NFL draft. 

At the same time, Northwestern had a player named Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The press had a lot of fun when NU and ND played each other.

The two WS's don't quite look identical, though the family claimed to be descendants of the playwright...and of course, his football nickname was "The Merchant of Menace" or "The Bard of Staten Island."
