Political scientists have put a lot of thought into trying to predict where revolutions succeed and where they fail. There are some broad rules of thumb, but it is hard to predict with certainty. And, as pointed out, often times it looks like things are not going well and the regime reaches a tipping point where it collapses very quickly.
