I admit I am kind of wondering if this is sarcasm. The very, very last thing the US should ever consider doing is firing a missile in the direction of Russia unless we are launching our entire strategic deterrent, God forbid. Russia too has satellites that detect missile launches. Once they determine the missile is heading to Russia, it is entirely possible a maximal retaliatory nuclear response will be on the way. We know how the Russian strategic rocket forces are supposed to be controlled, but it is Russia. They may not wait for "confirmation". Even if Armageddon does not immediately ensue, it would be an act of war. Russia will respond. You can count on it. A missile will be fired at the US. The US will then react. For many years this was war-gamed and essentially always escalation to full-scale war ensued.
 
IMO the Poles need to be the lead dog on this issue. They should call the Russian ambassador to "discuss" the problem. If Poland determines these drones were intelligence detection drones (which AFAIK they have not yet done) the Russians should be told that Poland will break diplomatic relations with Russia if it happens again. Russia's choice. Poland should also point out that they of course will destroy any UAVs illegally in Poland's air space. They should also point out the serious danger of a "misunderstanding" leading to a much more serious outcome.
