We've had a couple of decent QBs since who could run an offense and comfortably complete passes to open receivers (and not counting Kevin Hogan):I mostly agree with your pushback. I would however point out that KJ actually completed a LOT of passes to receivers that were not open. The receiver was bigger and could jump higher than the DBs and Stanford took advantage of that. It was a bit of a "gimmick" and without that advantage KJ wasn't a very good QB. Way too many INTs. The teams these QBs played on did not have great OLs and Stanford had a very limited running game at the same time. Tanner McKee in particular got banged up pretty bad. These downsides undoubtedly made it difficult to recruit QBs going forward. They saw that pretty good QBs had a hard time winning at Stanford. Why go there?
- KJ Costello (certainly in 2018 when he threw for 3500+ yards and 29 TDs)
- Davis Mills (who is still in the NFL backing up CJ Stroud in Houston)
- Tanner McKee (also in the NFL backing up Jalen Hurts in Philly and crushed the preseason this year for whatever that's worth)
