Yes Yogi

In 1953, when I was 12, I won a contest (based on my response in 25 words of less as to why I liked White Rock ginger ale). My prize was two tickets to a Yankee game, meeting the Yankees, a Schwinn bicycle, appearance on Jimmy Powers "Powerhouse of Sports" TV program on WPIX, Channel 11, in NYC, and dinner with Yogi and Phil Rizzuto. Yogi ordered half a watermelon for dessert. Fast forward, when I was teaching at Columbia and teaching a class in summer school at Tufts University in the summer of 1969, I drove from NYC to Boston. I pulled into a diner, walked in, and who was there? The "Little Scooter," Phil Rizzuto, who, as a Yankee tv announcer, was driving to Boston for the Yankee-Sox series, because there was an Eastern Airlines strike. When I recalled my having had dinner with him and Yogi 16 years earlier, he emitted one of his trademark "Holy Cow!" responses. He didn't know how to get to Fenway Park and asked me if I'd lead the way, which I did. Yogi and Phil, two giants of the game, and two of the nicest human beings one could imagine.
