Quite frankly, I was thinking the same thing.

Posey is a sink or swim choice by Greg Johnson.  Buster’s lack of experience is countered by the goodwill he brings to the job.  Is that goodwill enough to give him some breathing room as he attempts to build the Giants into a contender?  If not, how does Johnson tell him, “thanks and best wishes”.  

The same applies to Luck.  He has no experience managing a major collegiate football program.  However, he is beloved by the Stanford community.  How much time does he have to bring the Stanford football fortune’s back to life before the administration and fan base become restless?  And how does one tell Luck, “thanks and best wishes”.

Forgot to mention internal hire of Zack Minasian as SFG's GM. Two interesting minor items re: Posey -- after SF canned Zaidi, Posey stated that Melvin would hire and promote coaches and be in charge of day-to-day managing, departing from prior policy. Secondly, when he promoted JP Martinez, Posey elevated his last pitching coach, though Posey stated Melvin's comfort factor with JP was the key factor. And JPM is bilingual, important in today's game. JP's young (42), well versed in current analytics and modern pitching methods.

We've all seen situations in which there is rot at the top, but the next layers are solid, if not exceptional. And maybe that's the case with SF. Maybe Zaidi had a strong structure in place but he personally gummed up the works. Hope so. We'll see.

I believe both Posey and Luck will be given a lot of rope. You don't turn around from three consecutive losing seasons and four 3-9 seasons immediately. If they both show early progress -- and I think they will -- management will laud and reward them. Luck's got the tougher job, by far. Stanford needs a unique individual running that football program, and I doubt that TT is that individual. But there are so many recent challenges in NCAA football, I hope Luck gets some room to make mistakes. But he's a tie to the most successful era in that program, the team was 31-8 when he played with a Sun, Orange and Fiesta Bowl and a #4 and #7 ranking and a 2nd place Hiesman Trophy vote each time.
