My gut tells me that the US should set policy on the Ukraine conflict based on what's happening in that conflict.  For example, if the US is asking Russia to refrain from doing XYZ in its conduct of the Ukraine war in return for the US withholding permission to let Ukraine use its mid-range munitions, that makes sense to me.  I have no idea whether that concept is part of any doctrine that the US follows or whether its just a concept that makes sense in my mind and no one else's.
