Much like Bart, I think SF should give Schmitt an opportunity to play regularly by trading him.  Villar?  That ship sailed sometime ago.  He is a classic AAAA player.

I'm not even sure that Villar is an AAA player. His stat line, in a hitter's league (the PCL) is .253 .355 .435 .790. He actually has a higher BA at the major league level (.257).

Nice to keep Chapman. Now we just need to hope that Lee, Bailey, Ramos, Fitzpatrick, Wade sustain an equally high level all season long with no injuries, and that McCray, Lee and Yaz can step it up a notch. And hopefully Encarnacion, Luciano, Schmitt, Wisely and Matos mature.

Assuming the Giants lose Snell, Canha and Conforto but keep Ray and Yaz (still arbitration-eligible), and no one picks up Taylor Rogers or Flores, their active payroll commitments are $130,333,333, not including 15 pitchers who will probably make $15 mms. to $20 mms. collectively and 12 position players who will probably make $30 mms., assuming $25k for Chapman, the Giants payroll for next year tops out around $180 mms.

Interesting numbers  Mick, thank you.  What are the ramifications of that $180M?  How does it compare to other teams?  Are the Giants getting enough 'bang for the buck" at that level?  Is $2-2.2 mil a win appropriate?

Tough call. Right now, SF is #7, based on a current $170k Spotrac estimate with LA and Philly neck and neck at $236 mms., Yanks at $189 mms., SD at $177 mms. and Atlanta at $172 mms. All those teams are at least 13 games over .500 except the Giants, currently four games under .500. At the other end, no surprise, is the Oakland/Sacto A's at $21 mms. Yes, $21 mms.

My opinion, we didn't get the bang for the buck this year, too many hurt/underperforming/expensive free agents and we're the only one of the top seven that didn't make the playoffs. $2 mils. a win is a good number, $2.2 million a win...not so good.
