Was about to post the same article. I wonder if that is the biggest upshot of Ukraine’s invasion of the Kursk region, a message to Western supporters that Putin’s red lines are pure bluster and that no, letting Ukraine use ATACMS directed towards targets in Russia itself will not provoke a response from Putin, just as sending HIMARS, tanks, and other offensive weapons didn’t.
If I want to be charitable, I’d say that Western slowly incrementalism approach of sending a toe over the red line, followed by a foot, etc. winds up being less provocative than full on obliterating it, but we have to remember that every limitation we put on Ukraine makes their defense less effective, which reduces their chance of pushing the Russians back and increases Ukrainian casualties.
