Interesting article. IMO the number one goal of the Kharkiv offensive was to force Ukraine to move significant assets to meet the new attack. It has in large measure accomplished that, as the article states. In addition, Russia has traditionally used an "attack everywhere and reinforce success" approach to war. This was one such attempt. The fact Russia is now opening a new line of advance by attacking at a point 100 miles away is indicative of this still being the case. This approach stretches Ukraine which is an area where Ukraine is vulnerable.
The article also indicates that the situation in Ukraine caused a change in US policy. In so far as this is the case it is IMO unsettling. Russia was inevitably going to eventually attempt to take advantage of the areas where Ukraine had no strategic depth due to the proximity of the Russian border. We should have long ago established contingency plans regarding what would be our response. The enemy can surprise you and do something you couldn't reasonably anticipate. This was not one of those times.
