From everything I’ve read, the US strategy appears to be positioning for a not-too-bad negotiated resolution. The US view appears to be “can’t we all just get along.”  Same strategy in Gaza (though, obviously, there are many differences between the conflcits).  I just think the US wants to play peacemaker and doesn’t have the appetite for war, even when just.
