I do not find it odd that the younger generation sees less threat from Russia.  Us less young types who were born a long time ago have not forgotten the Cold War or our personal service in the military during that period.  Europe is far closer to the Bear and probably far more concerned than we are, but they have let their military degrade to such a point that without us, it would be very messy.
