Impressive stats. Both teams shot better than 50% in the second half. Stanford shot better than 50% for the game, while Baylor was not far behind at 45%. As has been pointed out Stanford was 50% for the game in 3-pts (7/14), while Baylor was only 2 of 14. Rebounds: Stanford 9O+31D while Baylor 8O+20D, Stanford was 31% (9/29) on its o-boards, while Baylor was 21%. Stanford had a slight lead in assists 13 (53 shots) to 11 (62 shots). Toni had as many blocks as Baylor did (1).
But, Baylor had 5 steals to Stanford's 1. Stanford 11 turnovers wouldn't seem too bad, but Baylor only had 3. Baylor was very efficient in scoring off the turnovers, scoring 20 points (vs Stanford's 4). Stanford had 16 fouls to Baylor's 12 but Baylor got only 1 more FTA. Five Baylor players had offensive rebounds while only two Stanford players had any (Chiney had none). Griner only had the 1 block and only 6 rebounds. Chiney's 3rd foul was with 15 minutes to go, so it probably did affect her. (4th was with only 2 minutes left.)
It isn't surprising that Baylor had 44 points in the paint, while Stanford only had 22.
Griner was 3 of 8 from the field with 3 defensive rebounds in the first 25 minutes until Chiney got her third foul. In the remaining 15 minutes, Griner was 6 of 9 with one offensive and 2 defensive rebounds. Cause & effect? (Certainly worth giving up some potential offensive rebounds in order to shut Griner down.)
Baylor outscored Stanford by 4 points during the time in which Amber was in the game.
Baylor outscored Stanford by 7 points during the time in which Toni was in the game.
If anyone is getting autographs next weekend, may I suggest the celebration photo, with the final scoreboard in the background...
A good night for Stanford athletics. (But it was kinda hard to watch both soccer and volleyball at the same time.) I hope it carries over through Saturday night.
