If Beck needs a surgical procedure, he will probably be out a couple months. SF is down to a Cy Young candidate, a guy they are trying to convert to a starter, a kid with less than 100 innings of big league experience, a player who has already experienced arm trouble this spring and a bunch of 4A guys.
Fans should just flip the calendar to 2025 when the reinforcements will be ready to graduate from the minors.
Currently, things look very grim on the pitching front.
No sweat, it's doable. Here's the historical comparisons, to your points:
Cy Young candidate: Mike Mussina. Jack McDowell. Juan Marichal (never actually won it). Lincecum. Or Logan Webb.
Guy they are trying to convert to a starter: Wilbur Wood. 10 years in the bigs, 23 collective starts against well over 300 appearances before he became a full-time starter. Won 20+ games four times.
Kid with less than 100 innings of big league experience: Dwight Gooden. 0 innings MLB experience, went 17-9 as a 19 year old starter, then 24-4 the next year.
Player who has already experienced arm trouble this spring: David Wells, 53.5 bWAR post-surgery. I think the second best post-surgery bWAR is actually Tommy John...
Bunch of 4A guys. Hoyt Wilhelm. Seven minor league seasons, MLB debut at age 29. 143 MLB wins. Hall of Fame.
That's all we need. I'm pumped...

Who is going to teach the knuckle ball to Hicks? :)
