Ukraine is retreating from Avdiivka, which has held for 9 years. Ukraine brought in one of their best units, 3rd Assault Brigade, formerly Azov Battalion, presumably as a sort of rear guard but they are under heavy pressure and the map is ugly. Resupply routes are all under Russian fire.

Also unclear how much defensive depth Ukraine has. Fortunately Russia's mechanized forces have been so degraded they probably can't really take full advantage of the situation.

This largely has developed because of artillery ammunition shortages. US aid needs to get restarted now or this will just be the start of a slow motion collapse.
