I just don't think players -- particularly hitters -- want to come to SF. I don't think it's the city or the state necessarily...Oracle is a very difficult park in which to hit, the fourth most difficult park in which to hit a home run, statistically speaking. What power hitter wants to go to a place where HRs go to die?
The Giants paid double what Lee's originally assessed value was...and he hits for average, not power. And along those lines, I realize he comes from the KBO, a league between AA and AAA...but he holds the KBO's career batting average record. Not too shabby.
The Giants played 12 rookies and six second year players (Bryce Johnson has since departed). That's exciting to me...I think a few of them will really excel this year. Part of the excitement will be fielding...the Sacto Rivercats had the worst team fielding percentage in the PCL, but the highest caught stealing percentage, and the third most double plays. Hopefully they get some good coaching this year...
Despite the contrary evidence from Bonds, you’re making a reasonable point on the hitting side. What’s puzzling to me is why a pitcher like Imanaga - a lefty who pitches high in the zone with a fastball that isn’t going to age well - would want to go to Wrigley when he could pitch at Oracle and have a reasonable number of away park home runs converted to outs. Free agent lefties over 30 ought to be climbing over themselves to pitch there. That’s one reason why I’m wondering if there’s something else going on. Management (Zaidi)? Ownership?
Not sure. It's puzzling. Sabean didn't seem to have issues getting hitters here.
Along those lines, one free agent the Giants should consider is Jorge Soler. Hit 36 HRs for Miami last year, and he crushes it at Oracle...has his fifth highest OPS here of the 33 MLB ballparks in which he's hit. .250/.341/.512/.853 last year. 32 years old, and the three prior years were just okay. Generally plays DH, can play corner outfield, but bad Rtot (-6), so he'd fit right in. Ninth in WPA (Win Probability Added) last year. 2021 WS MVP. Made $15 mms. last year, declined a $9 million player option. Not fast, grounded into 20 DPs last year. Lots of nagging injuries in 2022, healthy last year. Has only played 100+ games 4 times in a 10 year career. Reputed to want $16 million.
Sounds a lot like Pederson - in other words, run as fast as you can away from the guy. He is the antithesis of what the Giants need at this time.
I'm trying to figure out how Soler and Pederson are the same other than they're the same age, had the exact same number of plate appearances (425) and both are slow. Otherwise, Soler's results swamps Pederson's. Pederson had 14 doubles, 15 HRs, .764 OPS, 111 OPS+ and a beer belly. Soler had 24 doubles, 36 HRs, .853 OPS, 128 OPS+ and was named an all star. The only area where Pederson was better is that he got paid more.
A slow, lousy fielder. SF has had more than their share of guys like that (Pederson being the poster guy). Until they get younger and more athletic, they are going nowhere.
