It's a bit of a tangent, but I thought I read recent research that says we've been grossly underestimating the number of casualties in the U.S. Civil War.  As I recall, the authors base that conclusion on the records of the total number of deaths in the country during the pre-war, war, and post-war periods, not on any analysis of how many people died from wounds suffered during combat.  I don't know whether that methodology is valid, but I found the article interesting.  I think it's a couple years old now, so in this instance, add to all my usual disclaimers that I cannot remember the article perfectly.
