Well, this could be a Black Swan event...
The owner of the San Diego Padres died today. He was the guy who was willing to spend above their means to get San Diego a championship. The Padres had to take out a $50M loan to meet payroll in September. They are going to reduce their payroll and hard to imagine the new owner won't want to make money off the team. Sorry Padres fans, the "we're going all in to win" era is over for you.
This means the Padres will not be a player in the Ohtani sweepstakes and they will be trading Juan Soto before he becomes a UFA at age 26 after the '24 season. The question is do they trade him before the season or during?
