The Ukrainians, being no dummies, have realized that their surface drones are going to have real problems sinking a ship. Damaging a ship, yes. Immobilizing it? Maybe if you hit a vulnerable spot. Sink it? Not unless there is no damage control at all going on. Modern torpedoes are actually set to pass UNDER the ship. They don't actually hit it, normally. The warhead explodes under the keel, creating a "water hammer". Water is incompressible. The water hammer literally shatters the keel of the ship when the shock wave hits. The damage is massive. That is how you sink ships.
Ukraine could also be looking to use a water hammer against a support pillar of the Kerch bridge. That could actually take down the rail bridge in a way that would take a very long time to repair. Russia has good air defense against attacks on the bridge. I would wonder about how good their undersea defenses are. It might be easily possible to sneak through by traveling along underneath a commercial vessel to mask the signature. Worked for the Russians in the GIUK gap. Why not for Ukraine now?
