Well, indeed competent mercs do cost a lot of money. No telling how much Prigozhin kept for himself, but maybe not as much we might think. Prigozhin also got almost as much money from a catering contract to provide food to the Russian military. Obviously, these figures could be bogus, but I think we now know how Putin is going to "get" Prigozhin. It won't be for treason, it will be for stealing from the state. Putin can keep his word and kill Prigozhin anyway.

"Hopefully, nobody stole anything during these activities or, let's say, stole less," Putin said. "We will obviously look into all this."

I guess the definition of "less" is key here? Maybe Putin needed to dispense with Wagner because he simply couldn't afford them.
