There are lots of causes to arm injury, not merely number of pitches pitched in one game. Kind of pitches thrown, number of innings over a season, recovery routine, strengthening program, diet, delivery mechanics, genetics, body frame, and rest between starts all play a role. The most common cause of injury for young pitchers is “chasing velo” in high school to get noticed by colleges or the draft, improperly throwing sliders, or throwing them pre-puberty.
I do not believe that either Jeremy Guthrie or Jason Young dealt with arm injury. In fact, Guthrie was durable in MLB.
It was not an optimal situation for Quinn to throw 156, but not as horrible as some are making it out to be. Trainers will get him rested, and Quinn is no dummy. He’s been doing recovery routines his whole life. And if he was going to have one game to go over 115 pitches (a typical limit), last night was the one.
