Awesome performance by Mathews. Rivals the Jeremy Guthrie extra inning complete game in the regionals ~ 20 years ago. Slight edge to Guthrie because he went 12 or 13 innings in a pressure-cooker tied game. Marquess probably would've kept him in for 200 pitches that day!

Jeremy Guthrie went 13 innings and threw 144 pitches to beat Fullerton 3-2 in that 2002 regional.

The only time I can remember a Stanford pitcher throwing more pitches than Mathews was when Jason Young threw 167 pitches against Florida State in a loss in the 1999 CWS. Stanford had the lead going into the 9th, but Young gave up the tying runs and Stanford eventually lost in 14 innings.

Mathews turned in a great performance, no doubt about it. But I did not like Mathews being left in the game to throw 156 pitches. Surely somebody else could have gone out there with a 5 run lead in the 9th.
