Giants won their 7th of eight games in returning to a .500 record for the first time since April 6 -- they're now 24-24. Yesterday's game was particularly interesting for the following reasons:
1) It featured a matchup between the only two starters with ERAs under 2.00, including Twins starter Sonny Gray (1.64) and Giants right-hander Alex Cobb (1.94).
2) Conforto is on a serious tear. He hit his 6th home run in 12 games yesterday (along with a double). He's got 10 HRs on the season, leading the Giants, who have 67 HRs overall, 6th in MLB.
3) Cobb had a season high eight strikeouts over seven innings.
4) Camilo Doval is first in the National League in saves, and second overall in MLB with 13.
5) Correa was a late scratch.
Other observations:
1) Despite their recent successes, Giants runs per game have been dropping...now at 4.35, now #18 in MLB and below MLB average of 4.57. Their OPS is .726, basically at MLB average OPS of .728, so hopefully they will start scoring more. Giants have dropped to #3 in strikeouts (no longer the MLB far-and-away leader). Giants are 6th in HRs, but 26th in doubles and 27th in triples. Odd for a team that plays at a park so naturally given to triples that it has Triples Alley ... Giants don't have anyone in the top 10 in triples this year, nor did they in 2022 or 2021. Yaz was T2 in 2020. Crawford led the league in triples in 2016 with 11.
2) Giants pitchers are just above MLB average in runs allowed, at 4.65 per game. Their ERA is actually better than MLB average at 4.17 (league average is 4.28). Giants WHIP is almost exactly league average at 1.320 (MLB average is 1.316). At least they don't have a rotating staff. Giants have used just 17 pitchers overall, third lowest in MLB.
3) Giants are 26th in both fielding average and Rtot.
