Schmitt went one for four, and his average has plummeted to .400. Flash in the pan?
Schmitt singled with two runners in scoring position (Haniger, who scored, and he moved Yaz to third base). There were two outs, and it was an 0-2 count, and the pitcher was Alcantara -- last year's Cy Young winner and All Star, who, if not the toughest pitcher in the NL, is certainly in the handful of the toughest. And check out almost any throw of Schmitt's from 3B or SS...dude has a cannon.
BTW, the Giants have played eight straight games without an error. Right after Schmitt's arrival...
Schmitt's hit was also the GWRBI if that means anything these days.
It won't be long until Pitchers simply don't throw Schmitt anything in the strike zone. But Schmitt did take a strike in that AB. They certainly won't be throwing him anything near the zone on 0-2 for a while after last night.
I find what Schmitt is doing exciting. And he certainly has energized the team. But we should take a step back before announcing him as the franchise savior. He’s minor league hitting numbers have been good not great. And he is going to find the going tougher as pitchers learn his weaknesses - one of which is his chase rate. How he adjusts will be key.
Don’t get me wrong - Schmitt, Bailey and the sudden fast tracking in the farm system is exciting. We’ve been waiting for those “home grown players” and they are getting here.
This 4 game streak has been fueled by situational hitting (contact) and strong bullpen work. The former generally comes and goes over a season. But it appears to me the Giants have focused more recently on contact - not trying to do to much, thinking middle away in RISP situations. That they have won 4 straight without hitting an HR is a very promising development.
T'was a bit of facetiousness. . . .Very excited about youth rather than retreads. Makes it fun to pay attention . . .
Free Phogge!!!! And no, crimson doesn't refer to the Tide.
