So let’s say, Dixon starts game 1, Mathews starts  game two and Stanford goes 2-0. Both Scott and Dugan pitch in game 3 and Stanford lose, who starts game 4?

Can Dixon pitch again with 2 days rest, even if it’s only for a couple of innings?

One way of looking at it is what is our win probability of throwing Scott/Dugan vs. #4 seed's ace in game 1 versus the win probability of throwing Scott/Dugan vs. potential #2 seed's 4th starter in what would be our third game. I'd lean towards rolling the dice on the latter scenario. A lot of these smaller programs don't have the depth of the major programs but they may have one good Friday night arm. I'd also lean towards the latter because the consequences of losing game 1 are much more dire than losing the Sunday afternoon game. In both cases, we'd have to scramble to figure out who starts our 4th game and in the former scenario we'd also have to play a 5th game in order to advance.

I am inclined to agree with you.  I also think out pitching is pretty much a crapshoot after Mathews.  But as you say, our early opponents may be smaller schools with less difficult schedules over all so so how each of their pitchers performed against various level of competition over the year can be important when it comes to figuring out our rotation for the regionals.  Other teams are going to have trouble figuring out their rotations for the regionals if they are going to come up against us.  We have pretty much proven we can hit anyone anytime, and hit for power.  We have also shown that a decent team can pound out pitchers also.  So if we fall into the losers bracket who knows how many runs might be scored in total.  It should be entertaining, no matter what happens.
