I am in favor of interviews like McKinsey to differentiate including one on ethics. It can even be via AI and timed. You then cannot hide behind essays that have been edited by any number of people.

Indeed, my time was in the pre-internet era.  Since then, essays have become increasingly problematic.  Since AI--even more so.

I've been doing oral exams and lots of in-class writing in my own teaching.  There are not a lot of good alternatives for many fields.
