Re Montgomery, my guess is that Esquer knows he’ll need a lot of pitchers in the post-season. Keeping M tuned up is not a bad idea.

The weird thing about the post season is that circumstances can take you from being able to get by with a small amount of (good) pitching all the way to needing a to manage 5 games in 3 days. 

Stanford is reasonably well set up for a three-game weekend with Matthews, Scott and the Dixon-Dowd combination. Four to five game weekends scare me a lot, particularly because those extra games would be elimination games. To get back to the CWS Stanford may need to win a 15-14 lack-of-pitchers duel somewhere along the way.
