Beaty had a “upward mobility” clause in his KC contract. This meant if another team offered him a big league job within 48 hours of the Royals notifying him that he was not going to be on their roster, KC had to let him go.
The Giants wanted him and because of this unusual clause, they had to place him on the 26 man roster for a minimum of one day. Hence the Beaty for Johnson switch. Now Beaty can be optioned out to ride the Sac-SF express. In the meantime, the Giants sent Wisely back to Sac. and activated Johnson (who never left NY). Why the Giants didn’t keep Johnson in lieu of Wisely on Opening Day is anyone’s guess…..
An explanation by Zaidi at the time of the transaction would have been helpful but he probably figured we wouldn’t understand so why bother making an effort…….
