To revive a dying thread, pun intended, I posted last week about the unfortunate shooting of Spider Sabich (a former coach of mine) by Claudine Longet. 

Who is the only MLB player to be murdered in season? What were the circumstances? 

Just to be clear, I never played baseball beyond the minor league level in little league.

Lyman Bostock?  I don’t remember the circumstances.

Correct. Shot in the temple by a jealous husband. Turned out the woman was a friend of a friend whom he only met 20 minutes before the shooting and he was simply giving the two women a ride home. The shooter was found not guilty by reason of insanity (he claimed his wife's infidelity drove him crazy), and spent seven months in a psych hospital before he was released. By all accounts, Bostock seemed like a wonderful human being. Tragedy.
