I was one of the pre-eminent figures in the Roaring 20s. My grandfather was on the winning side in the U. S. Civil War, and I got my start as a board boy, updating stock transactions in a New York stock brokerage. In 1913, I opened my own brokerage, in 1917 I purchased the Sierra Nevada mine, and I was being sued for fraud by my customers by 1918. I was indicted by a Federal grand jury in 1923 for perjury and by another Federal grand jury for mail fraud (though I was cleared of all charges). 

I worked hard and partied harder. My mistress committed suicide. I was a member of Tammany Hall's political machine. I was a compulsive gambler and owned numerous gambling operations, including a thoroughbred racing stable.

Fifty years before Pele joined the North American Soccer League, I owned a professional soccer team in the fledgling American Soccer League, hugely popular with immigrants to America. I tried to foist American innovation into the sport, thereby infuriating FIFA and the USPFA (U.S. Professional Football Association, the governing body), instigating the "Soccer Wars" and prematurely ending soccer as a favorite pastime of Americans. The Great Depression finally killed it.

I started a professional football team called the New York Giants six years before the NFL started and the "real" New York Giants commenced. Gambler Arnold Rothstein was a close friend and brokered the transaction for which my family largely became known.
