History is full of battles fought only because the Generals could, not because they had to fight the battle.  The US Military has had its shares of such stupidity.  The operations in the A Sau Valley in  Vietnam are a good example such stupidity on our part.

As bad as the A Sầu Valley was, I think the Palau's in WWII was worse. That battle was only fought because nobody had the courage to say what literally everybody was thinking. It was obvious the Japanese troops marooned on those islands had no ability to affect the invasion of the Philippines. Just leave them there.

Verdun was fought for a reason. It almost worked for the Germans, and after Verdun the French army was a brittle instrument. The Palau's had no effect on the Japanese plans or actions, as those troops had already been written off. Then again, there is no limit on stupidity.
