I know people here are skeptical of the idea that "Russia is running out of ammunition", but it does seem like they are firing a whole lot less of it.

Nobody on "our side" really knows for sure what the cause may be. There are several things in play. Ukraine has done a good job of blowing up Russian ammunition storage, which for sure cuts down on the availability of shells. Russia is undoubtedly aware of the fact using outdated ammunition is dangerous and often relatively ineffective (because it misses the target or is a dud). Undoubtedly Russia is going to need replacement barrels for their guns and in the past have often used induced lulls in firing to do it. That may be going on to get ready for spring.

Lastly, and probably more importantly, Russia clearly has realized that much of their artillery was being fired without actually having a target. The targeting data was often old or too vague to be useful. Russia also doesn't have good BDA, so they often kill the same target many times over. They are cleaning up their act in this respect. No point in wasting ammunition when it won't help. How much they can improve on their targeting is unknown, but they are clearly trying.
