Don Liebendorfer was the original college flack followed by legends like Murf, Cavalli and Bob Rose. When Young was hired another candidate whom I knew told me that the offer was a lowball. The team PR role has become quite corporate on all levels especially in MLB where the access issue became “No” when it had been, “What do you need?”
When I shot my last story at Stanford, a piece about virtual reality conceived by ex-kicker Derek Belch, we received a ton of help from the Assistant SID but virtually no aid from the U’s overall PR people (necessary because we shot in a couple of labs).
Things got worse when we bluesheeted a 60 Minutes McCaffery profile piece in 2016. Jeff Fager approved and let us know that the story would lead the first show of the 2016 Fall season. A very big deal for Stanford Athletics. We were turned down. Unbelievable.
IMO from 55 years shooting a ton of important stories and films it was an incredible mistake by your school, evidence of a cocoon wrapped around your program.
Bob Murphy helped Plunkett get the Voldemort (albeit ancient history). Why were there not full court presses with Toby, Luck etc? Were the Bay Area press not cajoled to vote for Gearhart? How could an SID face the world when Barry Tompkins announced that he voted for Ingram?
Unbelievable.
Absolutely bonkers, and total malpractice by the university. Imagine being CMC, having narrowly lost out on the Voldemort the prior year, and 60 Mins wants to come in and highlight you on a big stage.
Awful. Throw the bums out.
