Giants have won four in a row, tied for the longest winning streak in the majors with the Yankees and Guardians.

Still blows my mind that the Giants are the second worst fielding team in the majors, and true to form, they've given up the second highest number of unearned runs in MLB with 82. Yankees and Cardinals have only given up 33.  How did that happen? If the Giants had given up 49 fewer runs, how many more wins would they have had?  The SFG ERA is #10, but WHIP is #19, total runs allowed per game is 4.31 with the MLB average at 4.29, so...not too bad.

Giants have scored 4.37 runs per game, the league average is 4.29, so...again, pretty average.  The Giants are an average team, one season after winning 107 games. Giants are league average in HRs and doubles, much less in triples and stolen bases. Giants are 97 in OPS+, less than average and had the fourth most strikeouts in MLB.  Ugh.

The bad defense - not just in terms of unearned runs allowed, but earned runs that would have been prevented by better defensive players - is the sort of under the radar reason for their regression to mediocrity that people who just pay attention to scores and record wouldn't appreciate.

The power outage and bullpen regression are other reasons, but the defense is to me the biggest factor.

I read that this was the single greatest reason for Tyler Rogers' decline...here's his advanced statistics.  The objective stats; e.g., batting average against, flyball percentage, exit velocity, etc., are all only slightly worse this year than last, but his results are much, much worse.

The biggest difference in Rogers season is hitters are not chasing as much.  His walks are up.  Rogers is valuable cause he’s versatile and durable.  He throws a lot of innings out of the pen. I suspect he will be back.
