The Toronto Star, in 2008, claimed that 60% of NBA players went broke within five years after drawing their last NBA paycheck.
Sports Illustrated estimated that 80% of NFL players went broke within three years after drawing their last NFL paycheck. The National Bureau of Economic Research, however, claimed it was just 16% that went broke, and that was after 12 years out of the game.
