The 1991 Stanford-Cornell game, which the Cardinal won, 56-6, provides a model for this mismatch.

That was quite the game - I think Stanford was still trying to figure out life without Palumbis (1-3 at that point), and the Cornell game provided some (perhaps inflated) confidence that Stanford could win.  Stanford went onto beat kal with both teams ranked (has that happened since?) and went to the Aloha Bowl.

Stanford invited Cornell to play that year as part of the Centennial celebration - a special one-off as Stanford was modeled after Cornell way back when.

What I remember of that game was that Stanford was trying to figure out how to get out of life with Palumbis. 

Memory fades, but I think Palumbis had started the first four games (where we went 1-3) and struggled. Toward the end of the game before, a blowout loss to und, they put some frosh in named Stenstrom, and he actually moved the team. The game against Cornell seemed a good time to try out the frosh. He stuck, Stanford won 7 in a row, Vardell set the single season rushing mark (which has been almost doubled since), and Stenstrom went on to start three more seasons setting passing records and getting pummeled repeatedly.

I also think that was the Big Game where cal rolled up hundreds of personal foul penalties, including on their kicker, and Brian Treggs figured out he couldn't afford to move to Palo Alto.
