Not the Yanks. Ernie Shore of the Red Sox. He had been a teammate of Ruth on the AAA Baltimore Orioles. Ruth argued with the short fused ump Brick Owens and was tossed along with the catcher. Ruth took a swing at Owens and was escorted off the field by the Fuzz. Shore took the mound and the base runner was caught stealing. Shore proceeded to retire the next 26 in order and for decades was credited with a perfect game. MLB changed the rules much later and now the game is classified as a combined no-hitter.

Shore was a terrific pitcher for Boston for 4-5 years.  Then he went to WWI for the 1918, and lost his talent.  He was a big fella for that time, 6'4", 220 pounds.  Was a sheriff in North Carolina for many years.  My wife's grandfather was a sheriff in Palo Alto during the same time period when it was a sleep little town and my grandfather was attending Stanford.  My granddad had also come from a very small town in Idaho.  I once asked him what the qualifications to be a sheriff in a small American town in the 1920s and he replied "Well, if you could take on four guys at once, you were the sheriff."
