I think we know that is nothing more than an empty threat. Or do you really think Russia wants to be obliterated too? The movie War Games taught everyone about the folly of starting armed nuclear conflict. 

Russia is nothing more than a bully pretending to be tough that will back down when punched in the face. Obama was way too feckless with Russia's invasion of Crimea, and 8 years later we saw what happens when dictators are appeased. It never ever works. Russia respects only one thing: brute force. NATO has way more force than Russia, especially after it has been bogged down in a war and having its economy destroyed for 6 months.
