Who’s going to pitch us back to the CWS?
The same way we did without Brendan Beck and Zach Grech this year. It's about who you have, not who you lost.
Last year Williams pitched 55.1 innings. This year he pitched 101.1 innings. Last year Mathews completely sucked (6.07 ERA 1.44 WHIP). This year he was a completely different pitcher (3.08 ERA, 1.27 WHIP).
All we need is for players to get better, which always happens. In 2021, we had eight pitchers with 35+ innings and five of them returned, only two with sub-3.50 ERAs. In 2022, we had seven pitchers with 35+ innings and if Williams and Mathews both leave, five of them will return, only two with sub-3.50 ERAs. The exact situation returning.
If you think Dowd, Dixon, Uber, Bruno, and Pancer will be the exact same pitchers then of course you'd be gloomy about 2023 pitching. But they won't. Bruno and Pancer, who were good in 2022, will pitch many more innings, and somebody else will improve. It really only takes one among Dowd, Dixon, and Uber.
