The oft injured players of yesteryear mostly disappeared into the realm of guys who had an unremarkable stint in the majors.Part of this is undoubtedly better diagnostic ability. The football "Its just a bruise" equivalent is not available when the MRI says otherwise. For established major league players, both the team and the player undoubtedly are on the same page. They both want to preserve the player and both are somewhat risk averse. As the Giants (and every other team) are proving, developing "genuine" major league players isn't easy so you want to preserve the ones you have. Young guys coming up are in more of a bind. They don't want to miss an opportunity to advance and they don't want to be seen as "injury prone". I suspect they are much more likely to play through injuries if they can.
But he’s right that objectively, players are on the DL more frequently and for longer than in the past.
