With respect, this war has not really been going how you have predicted it would from the start and it seems you are still trying to make it fit your priors. Retaking territory that Russia has occupied since the chaotic start of the war even after Russia has consolidated is a big deal, especially when it's miles from their border, and around Ukraine's second biggest city. Kharkiv is far more strategically important than some Donbas farmland that Ukraine is making Russia pay for with a LOT of blood.
