I wouldn’t put it past the Russian army to be doing a lot of stuff for show.  They have one person they need to please, so they may be doing strategically dumb but highly visible attacks. Their objective is less to win the war than to make Putin happy.

Remember, there is very little military experience in Putin’s inner ranks. Even Shoigu (love how autocorrect tried to turn it to “Spotify”) is an engineer and politician, not a military man.
