In areas that Russia is ceding, Russian troops are densely mining the areas they left. This is being reported more frequently for the Kyiv region, but it’s also true in parts of the Kherson region. In areas like Kherson, where battle lines remain active, I would expect the mines to contribute to a stalemated position.
I wonder whether the Ukrainians would do this on any of the terrain they cede in the East. On the one hand, the strategy would be very effective for defense. On the other hand, the strategy will make parts of Ukraine into no-travel zones, will likely cause civilian deaths, and is considered a war crime by some. I think the negatives outweigh the positives, but maybe there will be select instances where the Ukrainians feel they don’t have a choice.
