If you want some evidence that a Number might have survived, it does look like the lifeboats were deployed as of the time the photo was taken. I agree that the sailors’ fate being a mystery several days later is baffling.

Sadly, it seems Mariuol’s fall is imminent.  I’ve been thinking so for weeks, and the Ukrainian resistance has contested every inch of the city, but it now looks like the last of the Ukrainian defense is concentrated in the steel plant, and I expect the Russians will reduce it to rubble.

Sad end to an impressive display of bravery in the face of overwhelming odds.
