How it ends is Putin calling a loss a victory once his military is no longer capable of offensive operations. Government aligned Russian media is already starting to call the "special military operation" a victory that achieved its aims of punishing Ukraine and calling for troops to be withdrawn. Will be weeks or months, not years.
If he keeps pushing, his military may be unable to hold Crimea or the occupied Donbass, and he will want a negotiated settlement before then that locks in some form of Ukrainian neutrality and some degree of Western sanctions relief.
