I didn’t know EcK’s number so I looked it up. What I discovered (in addition to his #) is the A’s have not retired any numbers from their Philadelphia-era. Weird. You would think Connie Mack would have had an honorary designation (like Walter Haas) or that Al Simmons (among other players) would have had their numbers retired.
It's really interesting. The Philadelphia Athletics had some of the greatest players in baseball history play for them: Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Eddie Collins, Mickey Cochrane; but evidently the Oakland policy is that that the franchise's history begins with their move to Oakland, and that the Philadelphia and Kansas City eras are a separate thing.
Seems strange. Foxx, #3 (also wore #2), Grove, #10; Cochrane wore #2 (also #3), Al Simmons, #7. Don't know Collins.
