He talked about how a great leadoff guy took a lot of pitches and walked and was every bit as valuable as a slugger. I promptly went out to my next Little League game and started taking every pitch. After two K's looking and 1 walk my coach expressed his, um, frustration. (I was the cleanup batter in his lineup, LOL). "But coach, Joe DiMaggio said...."
Qwerty, didn’t you know Marilyn wasn’t won over by walks…..
Joe D. Great ball player. From all I’ve read, not so great a guy. I did see him once at Paolo’s in San Jose. The Paolos restaurant way down on 1st. Great old SJ place. Never was the same when it moved to it’s more plush spot near Woz Way. Shut down a few years back.
My first employer (1985) was a real "Mad Men" kind of place. The old Paolo's was their cafeteria, basically.
I realize that Joe D. had his personal peccadilloes. Still and all...when my sister got married at the Olympic Club, my son was around seven, and running around the gym with some other kids. Sweating like crazy. He asked an elder gentleman where he could get a towel, and the older guy said "Sure, let me show you." Then walked my son over to Louie, and asked Louie to fix him up with a towel. He walked off. Louie says to my son, "Do you know who that was? That was Joe DiMaggio." My son relayed that to me in a very offhand way -- he has no idea who Joe D. is or was.
